Gym and personal trainer marketing playbook: content that fills classes

People join a gym or hire a trainer when they trust them, and trust comes from seeing how you coach. Most fitness content is the same motivational quote. What works is answering real questions about training and nutrition with evidence, and showing your members. This playbook covers the questions, the formats per platform and the claims that break advertising rules.

Start here: three pieces to publish first

  1. 01

A beginner guide for the goal most members join with

Where to start, what a first month looks like, what results are realistic. It answers the question before the trial class.

  2. 02

Short exercise demos with one coaching cue each

Reels and TikTok. Ten seconds, one fix. They show expertise better than a sales post.

  3. 03

    Member stories, told with permission

The person, the starting point, the routine. Realistic results only.

This is the same Fitness playbook ADpilot's writer reads before it drafts anything for a business like yours. Use it on your own, or let the machine work through it for you.

Who you are selling to

  • Aspiring transformer - 25-40, wants visible body change, 5-10 lbs to lose/gain, gym-adjacent but inconsistent. Wants protocol, accountability, before/after social proof.
  • Strength athlete - lifts 3-6x/week, follows Helms/Israetel/Nuckols, knows hypertrophy from strength. Wants programming specificity, evidence over hype.
  • Performance / sport - amateur or competitive athlete, sport-specific demands. Wants periodization, recovery, sport-specific conditioning.
  • General-health adult - 35-65, exercise as longevity tool, not aesthetic. Wants joint-friendly, sustainable, time-efficient.
  • Returning trainee - lapsed 6m+, rebuilding. Wants beginner-safe progression without insulting prior experience.
  • Older adult (60+) - bone density, fall prevention, sarcopenia. Wants low-impact, balance, resistance basics.

Questions your customers type into Google

Each one is a page or a post waiting to be written. Answer it better than anyone nearby and the person searching becomes a lead. Swap the brackets for your own name, town or product.

  • How long until I see results from working out?
  • What's the best exercise to lose belly fat?
  • How much protein do I need per day?
  • Should I do cardio or weights first?
  • How many days a week should I train?
  • Can I build muscle and lose fat at the same time?
  • Is creatine safe long-term?
  • How many calories should I eat to lose weight?
  • What's the best workout split for beginners?
  • Do I need supplements to build muscle?
  • How do I get a personal trainer certification?
  • What's the difference between hypertrophy and strength training?
  • How much does a personal trainer cost?
  • Is fasted cardio better for fat loss?
  • How long should I rest between sets?

Content angles that bring in clients

  • Myth-busting: "No, you won't 'get bulky' from lifting" - contrarian evidence-based
  • Beginner-specific: "Your first 90 days" - reduces overwhelm
  • Time-constrained: "The 20-minute workout for busy professionals"
  • Age-specific: "Training after 40/50/60" - underserved audiences
  • Body-part specific: "Build bigger arms" - high search volume
  • Before/after case studies (ethical, with disclaimers)
  • Science explainers: "What research says about X" - builds authority
  • Gear / equipment reviews: honest comparisons with use-cases
  • Routine breakdowns: "My push-pull-legs split for 2026"
  • Nutrition one-pagers: "How to hit protein without tracking"

What to post, platform by platform

  • Instagram Reel - 15-45s; one technique cue OR one myth-bust; native-shot face + technique; trending audio low-volume; caption with 1-2 actionable bullets + CTA.
  • Instagram Carousel - 5-10 slides; 1 hook + 3-6 cue/data slides + 1 CTA slide; on-image text legible at thumb size; save-worthy formatting.
  • TikTok - 15-30s; faster cuts, on-screen text essential, technique flaw to fix is the highest-converting structure; never wear visible competitor gear.
  • YouTube Short - 30-60s; same as TikTok but slightly more setup space; clear thumbnail face + bold title.
  • YouTube Long - 8-15min explainers, full workouts, programming breakdowns; chapters mandatory; pinned comment with linked sources.
  • LinkedIn - thought leadership for coaches/trainers; client transformation case studies (anonymized + consent); business-of-fitness angle; NO "lose 30 lbs in 30 days" tone.
  • Pinterest - workout templates, meal-prep one-pagers, infographics; vertical 2:3 aspect; SEO-driven titles ("upper body dumbbell workout for women over 40").
  • X / Threads - science-explainer threads; stat to mechanism to practical takeaway; cite study + journal in last reply.

Claims and practices to avoid

General guidance from our industry notes, not legal advice. The exact rules depend on your country and regulator.

  • Medical diagnosis or treatment claims ("cures arthritis", "heals back pain")
  • Unrealistic timeframes ("lose 20 lbs in 2 weeks", "6-pack in 30 days")
  • Fake or manipulated before-after photos (FTC violation)
  • Promoting SARMs, anabolic steroids, prohormones, DMAA, DNP
  • Spot-reduction claims ("burn belly fat with this exercise")
  • "Doctor-approved" without named credentialed physician
  • Guaranteed outcomes ("you WILL lose 10 lbs or money back" without substantiation)
  • Endorsing unregulated supplements without FDA-compliant disclaimers
  • Targeting minors with body-image or weight-loss content

Let the machine run this playbook

ADpilot turns the questions above into long-form articles built from live Google results, and the angles into native posts for each platform you connect. The claims list goes into every brief, and eight quality gates check each draft before it reaches your approval queue. You approve, it publishes, then it watches what ranks and what people engage with, and writes the next piece with that in mind.
