How to read the check
The checker fetches https://your-site/llms.txt the way an assistant would, then reads it line by line against the format published at llmstxt.org. Problems come in two kinds.
- Errors break the format: no H1 with the site name on the first line, more than one H1, an empty file, or an HTML page where a text file should be. That last one is common: many sites answer every unknown address with their home page, so /llms.txt "exists" but is not a text file at all.
- Warnings make the file less useful: no summary line, list items that are not links, relative links, headings deeper than H2, or sections without links.
What a good llms.txt looks like
# Example Bakery > Sourdough bakery in Tallinn's Kalamaja, open Wednesday to Sunday, with pre-orders online. Opening hours and prices change with the season; the pages below are kept current. ## Key pages - [Menu and prices](https://example.com/menu): breads, pastries, weekly specials - [Pre-order](https://example.com/pre-order): order by Thursday for the weekend ## Optional - [Our story](https://example.com/about)
Order matters: the H1 first, then the summary, then any notes, then the link sections. Keep notes factual and short. Assistants read this file to decide which pages to open, so the one-line description after each link is worth writing by hand.
How the generator builds a starter file
It takes your site name from the page's site name or structured data, falling back to the title, and the summary from your meta description. It then reads up to 50 URLs from your sitemap, groups any folder with three or more pages (such as /blog/) into its own section, and lists the rest under Key pages. It names each link from its address, so "/spring-menu" becomes "Spring menu". Rename the links and add notes before you upload it.
Where to put it
Upload the file as llms.txt at the root of your site so it answers at https://your-site.com/llms.txt as plain text. On WordPress, Shopify and most site builders that means a file upload or a small redirect; check the address afterwards with this tool. For the background, read what llms.txt is and who reads it.
Questions
Straight answers.
What is llms.txt?
A Markdown file at the root of a website, /llms.txt, that gives AI assistants a short summary of the site and a list of its most useful pages. It was proposed at llmstxt.org in 2024.
Does Google use llms.txt?
Google has said it does not use llms.txt for Search or AI Overviews. Some AI assistants, coding tools and agents do read it when they visit a site. It is a small file, so it costs little to have one.
What does a valid llms.txt need?
Only one thing is required: an H1 line with the name of the site or project. After it come an optional "> " summary, optional notes without headings, and H2 sections that list links as "- [name](url): notes".
What is the Optional section?
An H2 section titled "Optional" holds links an assistant may skip when it needs a shorter context. Put secondary pages there.
Does the generator use AI?
No. It reads your home page title and description and the URLs in your sitemap, and turns them into the format. Edit the notes by hand before you upload it.
How often can I run it?
10 checks a day from one connection. The generator reads up to 50 URLs from your sitemap.
Why do you ask for my email?
The check of your current file shows at once. The starter file needs us to read your whole sitemap, so we email you a link to it: a bot can type an address but cannot open the email. We send nothing else unless you tick the box for tips, and we delete your email 12 months after your last request.
