How does Bing affect ChatGPT search?

Bing's effect on ChatGPT search is real but less certain than often claimed. OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers and does not name them in its launch post; Microsoft announced Bing as ChatGPT's default search experience in 2023. What is confirmed is that Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI answers cite pages Bing has found, and Bing Webmaster Tools now shows how often your pages are cited.

The common claim, and what is confirmed

You will often read that "ChatGPT search is just Bing", so ranking on Bing is how you get into ChatGPT. Part of that is history and part is guesswork. Here is what the primary sources say.

So the honest answer is: Bing very likely plays a part in what ChatGPT finds, it certainly drives what Microsoft Copilot cites, and nobody outside OpenAI can tell you the exact share.

Why Bing still deserves your attention

Even without a confirmed link to ChatGPT, three things make Bing worth the hour it takes to set up:

  1. Copilot is built on it. Microsoft Copilot and the AI answers in Bing ground their replies in pages Bing has found, and Copilot is built into Windows, Edge and Microsoft 365.
  2. Grounding is sold to others. Microsoft says its grounding service powers nearly every major AI assistant. Whatever the exact list, a page that is not in Bing's index cannot be supplied through it.
  3. It is the only engine that reports AI citations. Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report in February 2026 showing how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing's AI answers, which pages, and the grounding queries behind them. No other engine gives site owners that today.

New domains can wait a long time for Bing to crawl more than their homepage; adpilot.ee did. If Bing has not indexed you, you are invisible to everything built on it. You can see Google and Bing side by side, with Copilot citations, in SEO OS.

What to do

  1. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap.
  2. Turn on IndexNow. It is a simple ping that tells participating engines (Bing, Naver, Seznam, Yandex and Yep) when a URL is added, updated or deleted, so they do not wait for the next crawl. Many CMS plugins and hosts support it.
  3. Check that Bingbot and OAI-SearchBot are allowed in robots.txt and through your CDN or firewall. Bot protection that blocks unknown crawlers is a common, silent cause of missing pages.
  4. Watch the AI Performance report once you have pages indexed: which pages get cited, and for what grounding queries. Write the missing page when a query you care about cites a competitor.
  5. Do not stop at Bing. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode use Google's index, Perplexity runs its own crawler, and ChatGPT draws on more than one provider. Being indexed and useful everywhere is the safer bet.

How to measure the effect

Because the link between Bing and ChatGPT is not published, measure each engine directly rather than inferring one from another. Track your Bing impressions and indexed pages, Copilot citations from the AI Performance report, visits from chatgpt.com in your analytics, and whether ChatGPT names you for a fixed set of buyer questions each week. If Bing visibility rises and ChatGPT mentions follow, you have your answer for your own site, which is more useful than anyone's general claim.
